What makes a good goal?

A good goal is clear, aspirational, personal, and realistic.
Discuss your goals with your coach to create the most effective goals together!

How does the goals feature work?

On a practical level, the feature is build around the premise that your growth does not happen in isolation. Our product believes strongly in feedback and in welcoming the presence of others into your growth journey. We also believe that you cannot change or grow on what you cannot see or measure. Historically, setting goals was a vague and aspirational challenge that we hear about in self-help books and feel-good seminars, but we don't often have tools to help us sincerely identify, track, measure, and implement behaviors and changes that will help us reach our goals. Thats why this goals feature is built around data and around feedback.

The principle is: Think about what you want to accomplish. Determine what it takes to get there and what the requirements are in order to reach that goal. And then invite those that can help assess you along the way into your journey.

Once you've determined your goals, identified success metrics, and added reviewers, Sidekick will send a survey to all your reviewers on the cadence that you set for each one, per metric. Your reviewers will respond to the qualitative statements you wrote for them to answer (giving answers from 1 - 10), and then you will see their scores for you in your Sidekick app.

In order to preserve your reviewers' time and inboxes, we bundle all statements into one weekly survey. If there is no statement to be reviewed that week, we won't send them anything.

If your reviewers have multiple people they are sharing feedback for, we bundle all the statements for them to review into that same weekly survey, so they would review you and any others all at once, no more than once a week.

How do I edit a goal or success metric?

Tap on a goal and on the top right corner you will see a button to "Edit". Click that, and proceed with your changes. Be sure to save at the end.


Success Statement

What is a success statement?

This is the statement that you will write for your reviewers (or yourself) to answer on a 1-10 scale.

The statement does not contain comments, strong sentiments, or open questions. It is a simple 1–10 rating. This allows all feedback to be measurable, making it easy for you to see whether what you are doing is good, neutral or bad. On top of that it makes it easier for your reviewers to quickly give a lot of feedback to a lot of people.

The statement is always the same and asked at a frequency you choose. In the same way that you conduct user interviews with great care, we think feedback needs to be extremely precise. Think of how differently you might answer the following: “I feel like I have all the information I need to succeed.” & “I feel like Adrien communicates effectively.” Not quite the same. When we seek feedback, we often end up asking similar questions but not exactly the same giving us conflicting advice.

How do you word a great statement for your success metric

Start with “I”: Feedback gets personal and difficult when people feel like they are judging you. Putting “I” removes a lot of pressure on your reviewer, giving you more honest answers. Ex: “Adrien provides me with clear web designs to implement.” vs. “I receive clear web designs to implement.” The second one will be much easier for your web developer to rate honestly. It’s not about Adrien and how good he is, it’s about the designs and how easy they are for me to implement. Since others will be responding questions about you, leave your name out of the statement and instead centralize the statement around the reviewer.

Think end-result vs. specific actions: “I receive frequent feedback from Adrien.” is a specific action. To make it better think about the desired end-result. What are you trying to achieve by the goal? A better version of that statement might be: “I feel clear about where are my biggest areas of development.” or “I feel recognized for my efforts & results.” No matter how good the specific actions are, they don’t matter if you don’t reach the end-result.

Add a time component: The more precise you can be about the duration the better. Without a time component you risk having people generalize their response and not give you timely feedback. Example: “I feel that I am looped in to all the conversation I should be a part of.” This may lead someone to answer it as a general statement, which doesn't help you grow. A better question would be, “In the past 2 weeks, I feel like I was looped in to all the conversations I should have been a part of.” This allows you to get specific information about specific actions or behaviors that you can have specific conversations about.


Privacy

Are my goals private?

Yes! Everything you do on Sidekick is private.

You have the option of sharing goals with your coach, which we highly recommend. You also have the option of adding buddies to your goals, which will encourage your team to support you in the pursuit of your goals. All of this is optional and entirely up to you!

Will my coach see my goals?

Only if you would like them to. We encourage you to share!
The more your coach knows, the better they can help you. Your coach is bound by strict confidentiality agreements so they will never, under any circumstances, share anything you say or share with us or anyone else. Everything you do on Sidekick is strictly confidential!
